Obbie is the pastor at Third Baptist Church of Marion, Illinois. He previously served at churches in Georgia, Louisiana, and Kentucky. Obbie holds a PhD in Theology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he studied the theology of Baptist Richard Furman. Obbie specializes in American religious history and has been published in several theological journals, including the International Journal of Systematic Theology, Scottish Journal of Theology, and The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society. His book The Moral Governmental Theory of Atonement: Re-Envisioning Penal Substitution is set to be published this year with Cascade Books. Obbie has also contributed chapters in several books on the Puritan theologian Jonathan Edwards. He keeps a monthly blog called Vernacular and writes occasionally for the SBC's Ethics and Religious Liberties Commission. Obbie and his wife Kelly have twins, Roman and Ruby. Obbie loves running outdoors, eating Mexican food, rooting for his Kentucky Wildcats, and reading American history.
